Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating Patrick Chan on winning a silver medal in the men’s figure skating event at the Olympic Winter Games:

“I would like to congratulate Patrick Chan for his superb achievement today in the men’s figure skating event in Sochi. Canadians watched as you competed and our hearts filled with pride when you won a place on the Olympic podium.

“This silver medal is a fitting reward for years of hard work and perseverance.”

Patrick Chan was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. This is his second Olympic Games, having competed in the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. This is Mr. Chan’s first individual Olympic medal and his second at the Sochi Games. He is a three-time ISU World Champion (2011-13), two-time World silver medalist (2009-10), two-time Four Continents Champion (2009, 2012), two-time Grand Prix Final Champion (2010, 2011) and seven-time Canadian Champion (2008-14).

Quick Facts:

· The men’s figure skating event has two elements: the short program and the free skate. The scores for both are added together to determine the final results.

· The 2014 Olympic Winter Games are being held from February 7 to 23 in Sochi, Russia.

· Canada is represented by more than 221 athletes competing in 15 winter sport disciplines.

· More than 2,800 athletes, coaches, and team officials from more than 80 countries are participating in these Olympic Games.

Le Premier ministre Stephen Harper a fait aujourd’hui la déclaration suivante afin de féliciter Patrick Chan d’avoir remporté la médaille d’argent de patinage artistique masculin aux Jeux olympiques d’hiver :

« Je tiens à féliciter Patrick Chan pour sa superbe réalisation en patinage artistique chez les hommes, à Sotchi. Les Canadiens vous ont regardé performer et nos cœurs se sont remplis de fierté lorsque vous avez pris place sur le podium olympique.

« Cette médaille d’argent est la juste récompense d’années de travail acharné et de persévérance. »

Patrick Chan est né à Ottawa, en Ontario, et vit maintenant à Toronto, en Ontario, et à Detroit, au Michigan. Il s’agit de ses deuxièmes Jeux olympiques, après sa participation aux Jeux olympiques de 2010, à Vancouver. C’est la première médaille olympique individuelle de M. Chan et sa deuxième aux Jeux de Sotchi. Il est triple champion du monde de l’ISU (2011-2013), double médaillé d’argent aux championnats mondiaux (2009-2010), il a été deux fois champion des quatre continents (2009, 2012), deux fois champion à la finale du Grand Prix (2010, 2011) et sept fois champion canadien (2008-2014). 

Faits saillants

  • L’épreuve masculine de patinage artistique comporte deux éléments : le programme court et le programme libre. La somme des deux notes détermine le résultat final.
  • Les Jeux olympiques d’hiver de 2014 se déroulent du 7 au 23 février à Sotchi, en Russie.
  • Le Canada est représenté par plus de 221 athlètes en compétition dans 15 disciplines sportives d’hiver.
  • Plus de 2800 athlètes, entraîneurs et arbitres provenant de plus de 80 pays participent à ces Jeux olympiques.
