Today, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, attended an afternoon ceremony on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, to celebrate Canada’s longstanding support of ICAO and Canada’s important role as Host Country of ICAO.

In attendance at the ICAO ceremony were Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, President of the ICAO Council; Mr. Raymond Benjamin, Secretary General of ICAO; Madame Christine St-Pierre, Quebec Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie; and Mr. Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal.
- The ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations which promotes the safety, security and sustainable growth of the global aviation system. It was established following the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention, on December 7, 1944.
- Canada, one of the 54 original contracting states, has been the proud host nation of ICAO since its inception. ICAO’s headquarters are in Montreal.
- ICAO, along with its 191 member states and global aviation organizations, works to develop international Standards and Recommended Practices which states reference when developing their national civil aviation regulations.
